Over the past four months, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to explore Argentina, and it has quickly become one of my favorite destinations in South America. From its dynamic cities to its breathtaking natural landscapes, this country offers an experience like no other.

Argentina is a vast and diverse country, offering everything from bustling cities and wine country to breathtaking mountains and coastal wildlife. This itinerary follows a logical route covering some of the country’s highlights, and the entire journey can be done by bus or car, making it a great option for budget travelers and road trip enthusiasts alike.

 

Sidenote

 

While I’ve covered many incredible places in this itinerary, I haven’t yet had the chance to visit El Chaltén or El Calafate, so they aren’t included. There are also other cities I haven’t explored yet, but I hope to return and discover more of what Argentina has to offer.

 

 

1. Buenos Aires – The Vibrant Capital

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is a city full of culture, history, and nightlife. With its European architecture, bustling cafés, and tango-filled streets, it’s the perfect place to start your journey.

Recommendations:

 

• • Explore La Boca and the colorful Caminito street

• • Walk along Avenida Corrientes, Buenos Aires’ famous theater district, lined with historic venues, bookstores, and cafes

• • Visit the historic neighborhood of San Telmo

• • Experience Buenos Aires’ nightlife in Palermo Soho

 

2. Córdoba – The Heart of Argentina

Córdoba is known for its colonial history, student culture, and beautiful sierras. It’s a great stop for history lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Recommendations:

 

• • Explore Jesuit Block and Estancias, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

• • Take a day trip to Villa General Belgrano, a charming German-influenced town

• • Visit La Cumbrecita, a picturesque pedestrian-only village in the Sierras

• • Go hiking in Los Gigantes or Quebrada del Condorito National Park

 

3. Mendoza – Argentina’s Wine Country

Mendoza is the heart of Argentina’s wine production and offers stunning views of the Andes. Whether you’re a wine lover or an outdoor adventurer, there’s plenty to do here.

Recommendations:

 

• • Take a wine tour in Maipú or Luján de Cuyo (rent bikes to explore the vineyards)

• • Go white-water rafting in the Mendoza River

• • Take a day trip to Aconcagua National Park, home to the highest peak in the Americas

• • Visit Potrerillos, a beautiful lake and mountain region great for outdoor activities

• • Relax in the Cacheuta Thermal Baths, known for their natural hot springs

• • Hike Cerro Arco, a popular trek near Mendoza offering great panoramic views

 

4. Salta & Jujuy – The Northern Andean Experience

Salta and Jujuy offer some of Argentina’s most stunning landscapes, with dramatic mountains, colorful valleys, and charming colonial towns.

Recommendations:

 

• • Start in Salta and take a ride on the Tren a las Nubes

• • Drive Ruta 40, stopping in Cachi, Rosario de la Frontera, and Cafayate

• • Explore Purmamarca and the famous Cerro de los Siete Colores

• • Visit Salinas Grandes, Argentina’s vast salt flats

• • Take a road trip through Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

 

5. Bariloche – Patagonia’s Alpine Paradise

Bariloche, located in the Argentine Lake District, is known for its stunning scenery, chocolate shops, and outdoor activities.

Recommendations:

 

• • Drive the Circuito Chico for breathtaking lake and mountain views

• • Hike Cerro Campanario for panoramic vistas

• • Visit Llao Llao and its stunning hotel grounds

• • Go kayaking or take a boat trip on Nahuel Huapi Lake

• • Visit Puerto Blest, a stunning area with lush forests and pristine lakes

• • Take a boat trip to Cantaros Cascade, a beautiful waterfall surrounded by nature

• • Relax on the beaches of Bariloche, such as Playa Bonita and Playa Sin Viento

• • Visit the Patagonia Cervezeria for craft beer with a view

 

6. Puerto Madryn – Wildlife & Marine Life Encounters

Puerto Madryn is the gateway to Peninsula Valdés, one of the best places in the world to see marine wildlife.

Recommendations:

 

• • Visit Peninsula Valdés to see whales (seasonal), sea lions, and elephant seals

• • Take a boat tour to spot southern right whales (June–December)

• • Visit Punta Tombo, home to the largest Magellanic penguin colony in South America

• • Go snorkeling with sea lions in Puerto Madryn

 

Final Thoughts

This itinerary provides a mix of city experiences, natural wonders, and adventure opportunities, making it a well-rounded trip through Argentina.
